A Worthy Battle for Texas ChildrenPosted: July 28, 2013
For almost 50 years I've been involved in perfecting the swim lesson for children. The fun, but effective swim class has consumed most of the space in my mind for the majority of my life.
This past year has been different. My focus is shifting.
Because for all the swim students touched by Emler Swim School, I am haunted by the children we never saw, who lost their lives underwater.
This year, in Texas, we've already lost 43 children to drowning. We lose the most children to drowning than any other state in the union. You can see below that 78% of those deaths were under the age of 5 years old.
So this past year, Emler Swim School launched a non-profit called Lone Star Lifesavers. Our goal is to stop, or at least slow down, the totally preventable loss of Texas children to drowning.
And this week, July 29th through August 3rd, we are joining the Consumer Products Safety Commission by acknowledging Pool Safely Week at Emler Swim School.
We have three goals during Pool Safely Week.
1. Teach your children to keep themselves safe around the water.
2. Educate our parents with Lone Star Lifesavers safety tips.
3. Raise support for Lone Star Lifesavers. We need volunteers and money to save Texas lives.
Go to lonestarlifesavers.com to see if this is a cause that touches your heart. We could use your help in this worthy battle.
